Dr. Lake received his physical therapy post-baccalaureate
certificate at the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey and his Ph.D. in Physiology
from Texas Tech University School of Medicine.
His graduate research was in the areas of neurophysiology
and cardiac physiology. Dr. Lake has taught
in physical therapy programs for 16 years,
first in New Jersey and then at Northeastern
University in Boston. For 6 years, he was the
Chairperson of the Physical Therapy Program
at Northeastern. At Northeastern University,
he received the Excellence in Teaching Award
and twice the Physical Therapy students dedicated
their Yearbook to him. He has taught courses
in gross anatomy, clinical physiology, human
development, kinesiology, therapeutic modalities,
neurological physical therapy evaluation and
therapeutic exercise, gerontology, pharmacology,
neuroscience, musculoskeletal clinical medicine,
neurological clinical medicine and research.
He has used problem based learning and other
cooperative learning methodologies in the teaching
of physical therapy and other health professions
students. Since beginning the Physical Therapy
Program at Armstrong Atlantic State University,
he has taught musculoskeletal evaluation and
treatment, cardiopulmonary evaluation and treatment,
research methodology, cultural diversity issues
and legislative issues. He brought to the Armstrong
Atlantic State University curriculum the interest
in innovative educational design. As a result,
the Physical Therapy Program uses a modified
problem based learning design. Dr. Lake has
spoken regionally, nationally and internationally
on neurological physical therapy, electrotherapy
and innovations in physical therapy teaching
methodologies. He has published a major review
article on the uses of neuromuscular electrical
stimulation in sports medicine. Dr. Lake is
very involved in the American Physical Therapy
Association (APTA). In Massachusetts, he was
Education/Program Chair, a member of the Chapter
Board of Directors and Executive Committee
and a District officer. He has served 5 terms
as a delegate to the APTA House of Delegates,
the national policy making body for the profession
of physical therapy. He is presently a member
of the finance and legislative committees of
the Physical Therapy Association of Georgia.
He has just ended his term as Treasurer and
Executive Committee member of the Section for
Education, APTA, and he is a member of the
finance committee of the Section on Geriatrics.
He is a member of the Cardiopulmonary Section
of the APTA. He is also a member of the American
College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological
Society and the American Schools of Allied
Health Professions.
